GROW NANAIMO

Logo Design for the Nanaimo Museum

Grow Nanaimo

Nanaimo Museum’s Feature Exhibit on Local Agricultural History.

The Challenge

The Museum is putting together a feature exhibit on Nanaimo’s agricultural history with focus on Snuneymuxw agriculture and food security. They aim to inform the community in Nanaimo about our robust agriculture history and hopefully increase appreciation for our local food and plants. They need a logo and brand identity to inform the design of their panels and social media posts, as well as feature on merchandise to be sold and given away during the exhibit. The logo will also need to feature on programming materials such as games or interactive exhibit pieces.

The Approach

The seeds for this exhibit were originally sewn in 2019 and then postponed due to the pandemic. I took inspiration from the original development of the exhibit and expanded on them. The brief I was provided featured vintage looking farm labels and lots of native plants.

What I Did

I used Adobe Illustrator to design a mood board and logo for the project. Taking materials from previous exhibit development meant I already had a jumping-off point, I just needed to fill in the gaps. I achieved a playful and welcoming vibe while incorporating elements of nostalgia and farmstand aesthetics. I initially took inspiration from stamps that you might see on the side of a milk crate or produce bag.

Having access to the Museum’s archives and working in tandem with the exhibit technician meant I could research the exhibit’s materials extensively. I also worked closely with the programming coordinator to develop materials for children and adults who will interact with the exhibit.

The Next Step

Due to the success of this project, I will be taking additional responsibilities to design exhibit materials such as panels and interactives to be installed in September 2025.
