Vancouver Travel Guide
Editorial Design
Vancouver Travel Guide
An eight page travel guide on newsprint paper for a project for a 4th year editorial design class.
The Challenge
From the project brief:
“For this project, you will research, write, design, and produce an 8-page tabloid-style newspaper travel guide showcasing the unique aspects of a city of our choice. The final designs will be printed on newsprint through the UK-based craft printer Newspaper Club. Students will present their completed travel guides in an in-class “Travel Expo” at the end of the semester.
This project emphasizes the core principles of editorial design and visual storytelling while requiring meticulous attention to detail and strict adherence to print specifications, including the unique considerations of designing for newsprint.”
The Approach
Understanding the audience, I chose to approach this Vancouver travel guide with a fast-paced but adventure seeking type in mind. The layout is meant to be enjoyed both in-depth and at a glance.
What I Did
Using Adobe InDesign and photos from Unsplash, I adhered to a grid and exercised editorial design principles to create an appealing, easy to skim through layout. I designed the back cover to be digestible as well, in the event that a busy traveller puts the travel guide down reversed.
